The hardest part of our workouts is showing up - we make it simple for you to push yourself, be your personal best and give you more. MORE results.
Heartrate-based workouts are nothing new but there is a new gym chain in town that claims to have cracked the code. So I did some undercover investigation to get the goods on whether or not the theory behind Orangetheory is flawed or fit. There is a new-ish chain of gyms popping up around the world called Orangetheory Fitness, and after hearing a few of the athletes I coach rave about it, I figured I should give it a try. Happily, they offer a free trial session, so I really had nothing to lose. Except for perhaps my fitness dignity.
How Orangetheory’s Design Helps You Get Fit
But instead of wandering from bench to machine to pull-up bar to mat, this time I decided to take classes. After some research, I chose an Orangetheory Fitness center up the street. It was time to stop going it alone. Orangetheory classes mix running, rowing, and other aerobic activities with weight, resistance, and core strength training. No two sessions you attend are ever exactly the same. Attend a workout there two or three times a week and just about every muscle group in your body will be activated, with your heart getting pushed well into the productive range for cardio strength development. The session was made up of at least a dozen women, while I was one of only two men. The exercises the women were doing —one half of each class does cardio while the other half works on strength training — looked too easy, speaking frankly. Most participants were using light weights and slender resistance bands. How was I going to rise above my fitness plateau like this?

I am downright sweaty. Basically the whole premise is workout for an hour, burn extra calories for up to 36 hours. They do this by targeting heart rate zones that stimulate the metabolism and increase energy. Each workout is a combination of power, strength, and endurance elements using a treadmill, a rower, the TRX system , free-weights, and body-weight moves.

378 - Is the Theory Behind Orangetheory Fitness Flawed?
It was my first exposure to high-intensity training in a group setting. I had never touched a kettlebell before and pull-ups were a weak point for me. After the workout, I felt like I was going to pass out, puke, cry, or all three.
I've been going to Orangetheory pretty regularly for the past three years, which means I'm basically an OTF pro at this point. I always get there early so I can grab a treadmill card I prefer starting on the treadmill. I know which treadmill and floor space I like. I know my favorite instructors shout-out to the amazing coaches at the Astor Place location in New York City!
